How to Prepare for Networking Events

Attending networking events can be a great way to meet entrepreneurs, potential clients, and even new friends. Before going to a networking event there are a few things you can do to prepare to make the most out of the event.

Here are some ways to prepare for networking events:

Order Business Cards

Business cards are essential at networking events. They help your new connections find your phone number, website, company name, and social channels. Before the networking event, make sure the information on your business card is correct and order more if needed. To get more people to visit your website from your business card, consider adding a QR code. Remember to always bring extra business cards to networking events!

Optimize Social Media Accounts

Before a networking event, consider doing a social media audit of your account profiles. Make sure your social bios are optimized with information on what you do, including a profile photo that shows who you are, a link to your website, and accurate contact information. Don’t forget to ask people to connect on social media at the event. Often times this is the best way to convert a connection to a supporter or customer. After they follow you, they can get to know you through the things you share online.

The Elevator Pitch

When going to networking events, make sure you have a little speech practiced that is one or two minutes long to quickly describe who you are and what you do. This is often called an elevator pitch, as in you should be able to finish your pitch before an elevator ride would end. Thankfully, at networking events you have a little more time to connect than an elevator ride would. To make a memorable elevator pitch, consider adding in some personal details or add a quirky question at the end. This will help your new connection remember you when you meet again in the future.

Dress for Confidence

When attending networking events, confidence is key. To make an impression and feel confident on the day of the event, choose an outfit that makes you feel comfortable and confident. Wear the shoes you love, an outfit that makes you feel good, and you’ll feel unstoppable. If you’re nervous about the event, just remember that other people will feel similar and you’re all in the same situation. You are all there to make new connections and have fun!

Share on Social Media Before the Event

Sharing on social media is a great way to make connections before the event. If you share that you’re attending the event, you might be able to meet people beforehand. This can help you to feel a little more comfortable at the beginning of the event as you might recognize some faces. When you’re more comfortable you’ll be able to make a better impression and really connect with people attending. After the event, you can also tag new connections so they can find your social media accounts.
